Welcome to wp-admin
Every action you take on a WordPress site — writing a post, changing a theme, installing a plugin — happens through one place: the wp-admin dashboard. Today's lesson is a guided tour so nothing in later lessons feels unfamiliar.
You don't need to memorize every menu item today. The goal is just to know what each area is for, so you can find your way back to it later.
- ✓wp-admin is always reached at yoursite.com/wp-admin, regardless of host or theme.
- ✓The left-hand sidebar is the same on every WordPress site — once you learn it here, it transfers everywhere.
- ✓Nothing you click today is permanent — the dashboard is safe to explore.
What Each Menu Item Actually Controls
The left sidebar is where almost everything happens. Here's what you'll actually use in this course.
Blog-style content, shown newest first — articles, updates, news.
Standalone content like "Home," "About," or "Contact" that isn't time-based.
Every image, video, or file you've ever uploaded, in one library.
Themes, menus, and widgets — controls how the site looks and is structured.
Installed add-ons that extend what WordPress can do.
Everyone with a login to your site, and what they're allowed to do.
Site-wide configuration — title, tagline, URL structure, and more.
Posts, Pages, Plugins, and Appearance each get their own full lesson soon. Today is just about knowing where things live.
What "Settings" Is Actually Storing
The Settings menu doesn't change how your site looks — it changes the underlying configuration WordPress uses to run the site correctly.
// Settings → General Site Title // shown in browser tabs and search results Tagline // a short description of your site WordPress Address // the URL WordPress core files live at Site Address // the URL visitors actually see Timezone // affects post dates and scheduling
